There's been plenty of questioning of this 'don't be evil' line for some time now. I don't buy into it personally.

Thanks for the tip, I will try Duck Duck Go. I don't like putting so much trust in one company, either. It's a shame that they offer so many useful, free services! Honey catches more flies than vinegar ...

I'll try that too :)

There are several alternatives to Google, but this is the first I heard of duckduckgo.com. I need to give them a try. It pays not to use IE or Windows too. I have all kinds of privacy tweaks worked into the Linux distro I use.

Thanks for the reminder that no service is really free!

We are very much in the Wild West era of web2.0. I grew up in an era that was far less interconnected that operated at a different clock speed. I don't like the fact that tons of data is being gathered about me and I don't look forward to the coming era of hyper-targeted advertising like what is seen in "Minority Report".

On the other hand, much of my work search is done on really esoteric policy and regulatory stuff that isn't easily monetized. Likewise, my searches at home are done on esoteric technology subjects. Again, someone could try to make money off that, but it wouldn't be easy.

My brother has started intentionally dropping weird things in his Facebook posts to tweak the sidebar ad results. It is kind of fun! For whatever reason, I saw ads for lake property and wheelchair accessible vans. So I went with it and commented on how I hoped the lake house was handicap accessible. Sure enough, I got new sidebar advertising for ADA discrimination litigation.

While tweaking entities associated with Facebook is fun, it makes the invasive nature of digital lack of privacy more evident. The Wild West will eventually settle down through national legislation. I think Facebook is already on a path to AOL or Yahoo like oblivion. It will be interesting to see who is still around in 20 years.
